Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. Since its launch on September 20, 2010, CaBi has expanded significantly, growing from 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across eight jurisdictions. In 2024, the program achieved a record-breaking 6 million trips, marking a 36. 9% increase in annual ridership from the previous year.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted CaBi's role in connecting residents to jobs and cultural sites. The administration has invested in modernizing infrastructure, including the replacement of over 140 older stations and a solar canopy pilot for e-bike recharging. This initiative aims to keep bikes in service longer while reducing operational costs. Furthermore, partnerships have expanded access to cycling for individuals with disabilities. The Bowser Administration's ongoing investments in multimodal transportation reflect a commitment to enhancing accessibility and promoting sustainable travel options.
