Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has evolved into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. since its inception in 2010. Originally a partnership between DC and Arlington County, CaBi now features over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across three states. In 2024, the system recorded over 6 million trips, marking a 36.
9% increase from the previous year and breaking its annual ridership record for the second straight year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted CaBi's role in enhancing mobility for residents and visitors alike. Recent upgrades include replacing over 140 of the oldest stations and introducing a solar canopy pilot to help e-bikes recharge while docked. Additionally, the program has expanded access to adaptive cycling for individuals with disabilities through partnerships with organizations like Achilles International. The Bowser Administration has made substantial investments in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network significantly.
The FY26 Budget includes $74 million for new pedestrian and bike trails, supporting continued growth in cycling and public transit access.
