Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has evolved into the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. Since its launch in 2010, the program has expanded to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the District and surrounding areas. In 2024 alone, riders took over 6 million trips, breaking the all-time annual ridership record for the second year running. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum noted the importance of CaBi in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural destinations.

The program also prioritizes inclusivity, offering adaptive cycling sessions for riders with disabilities. Recent investments in the FY26 Budget aim to further enhance the District's multimodal transportation options, including the addition of bike lanes and trails. Since 2021, DDOT has replaced over 140 aging CaBi stations, and new solar canopies will allow e-bikes to recharge at select stations. Residents can explore the system and pricing at capitalbikeshare. com.
