Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, a unique bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched on September 20, 2010, CaBi has grown from an initial 49 stations to over 800, recording more than 50 million trips to date. In 2024, riders took over 6 million trips, breaking the annual ridership record for the second consecutive year with a 36. 9% increase from 2023.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the system's importance in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. E-bikes, introduced in 2018, have surged in popularity, now representing over 60% of rides. The DDOT has invested in replacing older stations and launched a solar canopy pilot to improve service efficiency. Additionally, adaptive cycling sessions have been introduced to expand access for riders with disabilities. The FY26 Budget includes significant investments in multimodal transportation, further enhancing infrastructure across the District.
