Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare

Washington, DCLocal News

The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has grown from a pilot program to the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. , boasting over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes. In 2024 alone, riders took more than 6 million trips, setting a new annual ridership record for the second consecutive year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum stated that CaBi has become essential for mobility across the District and surrounding areas.

The introduction of e-bikes in 2018 has led to over 60% of rides being taken on these electric bicycles. Recent improvements include the replacement of over 140 older stations and a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes, enhancing service efficiency. The Bowser Administration's historic investments in transportation have resulted in the construction of 55 miles of bike lanes and expanded access to cycling for all residents, including adaptive cycling programs for those with disabilities. The FY26 Budget, "Grow DC," aims to further bolster multimodal transportation with substantial funding for new trails and public transit. Residents are encouraged to explore CaBi's offerings at capitalbikeshare.
