Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration is celebrating the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), a groundbreaking bikeshare system launched in 2010. This program has expanded from an initial 49 stations and 400 bikes to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, making it the largest municipality-owned bikeshare in the U. S. In 2024, CaBi achieved a record of over 6 million trips, reflecting a 36. 9% increase from the previous year and demonstrating its growing popularity.
DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum stated that CaBi is vital for connecting residents to jobs, schools, and cultural sites. Recent improvements include a solar canopy pilot aimed at enhancing e-bike service longevity and reducing costs. Additionally, CaBi offers adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities, expanding access to cycling. The FY26 Budget continues to invest in multimodal transportation, with significant funding directed toward bike lanes and pedestrian trails. Overall, these initiatives underscore the District's commitment to promoting healthier and more sustainable transportation options.
