Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration is celebrating the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which has evolved from a pilot program to the largest municipality-owned bikeshare system in the U. S. Launched in 2010, CaBi now boasts over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes, with riders taking more than 50 million trips. In 2024, the program recorded over 6 million trips, surpassing past annual records for the second consecutive year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized the system's importance in connecting residents to vital destinations.
The program also promotes inclusivity through partnerships offering adaptive cycling for individuals with disabilities. Recent upgrades include replacing more than 140 older stations and implementing solar canopies to enhance e-bike functionality. The administration has invested heavily in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget continues this trend with significant funding for new pedestrian and bike trails, further enhancing local mobility options.
