Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration celebrates the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare (CaBi), which launched in 2010 and has grown to over 800 stations and 8,000 bikes across the DC metropolitan area. In 2024 alone, riders took over 6 million trips, breaking the previous year's ridership record for the second consecutive year. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum emphasized CaBi's importance in connecting residents to essential services and cultural sites. The program is administered by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) through a contract with Lyft and has introduced adaptive cycling sessions for individuals with disabilities. Since 2021, DDOT has replaced more than 140 outdated stations and launched a solar canopy pilot to recharge e-bikes, enhancing operational efficiency.
The Bowser Administration has invested significantly in multimodal transportation, building 55 miles of bike lanes and expanding the trail network. The FY26 Budget, Grow DC, allocates $64 million for WMATA and $74 million for new bike trails, furthering the District's commitment to sustainable transport. Capital Bikeshare has become a vital part of the District's transportation landscape, promoting health and accessibility for all residents.
