Bowser Administration Celebrates 15th Anniversary of Capital Bikeshare
The Bowser Administration commemorated the 15th anniversary of Capital Bikeshare, which launched in 2010 as a groundbreaking bikeshare system in the U. S. Initially starting with 49 stations and 400 bikes, CaBi now operates over 800 stations with 8,000 bikes across multiple jurisdictions. Riders have made over 50 million trips, with 2024 alone recording more than 6 million, marking a record for annual ridership. DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum highlighted the program's importance in connecting residents to jobs and cultural sites.
Since 2021, DDOT replaced more than 140 of the oldest stations and introduced a solar canopy pilot for e-bikes. Additionally, a partnership with Achilles International provides adaptive cycling options for individuals with disabilities. The administration has invested heavily in expanding cycling infrastructure, including 55 miles of bike lanes and 13 miles of dedicated bus lanes. The FY26 Budget, titled Grow DC, continues to support these transportation initiatives.
