Mayor Bowser Urges Residents to Take Advantage of Breast Cancer Screenings During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Mayor Muriel Bowser encourages uninsured and underinsured DC residents to utilize free breast and cervical cancer screenings through the Project WISH program, marking the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is a significant health concern in the District, leading to numerous cancer-related deaths among women. The FY26 Grow DC Budget includes a $290,000 investment to expand these screening services across all eight wards. In the past year, Project WISH has supported more than 1,300 women by providing free screenings and ensuring timely follow-up care after abnormal results. Patient navigators play a crucial role in guiding residents through the healthcare process, significantly reducing the median follow-up time from 76 days in 2023 to 52 days in 2024.
This initiative highlights the Bowser Administration's commitment to improving health outcomes and access to care for women in Washington, DC. Additionally, DC Health will participate in community events to promote awareness and provide screenings. For more information, residents can visit the Project WISH webpage or attend upcoming health fairs.
