Mayor Muriel Bowser inaugurated the Reservoir District Townhomes in Ward 5, which includes 146 new homes, with 22 set aside as affordable housing. This initiative is part of a larger redevelopment of the former McMillan Sand Filtration Site, which now features a recreation center and a 6. 2-acre park. Bowser stated that the project exemplifies the successful transformation of underutilized land into vibrant neighborhoods. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie noted the importance of the project, which took decades to realize and reflects community values.

The townhomes are designed to complement historic structures on the site, enhancing the area's character. Bowser's administration is committed to increasing homeownership opportunities, as shown by investments in housing programs totaling over $175 million. The Reservoir District will also host a summer event series aimed at fostering community engagement and enjoyment of the new public spaces. This development not only addresses housing needs but also enhances local amenities and community cohesion.
