Mayor Bowser Highlights Free, Safe and Fun Summer Opportunities for DC Youth, Encourages Families to Stay Cool During Extreme Heat
Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasized the importance of free summer programs for District youth, encouraging families to register as the city faces an Extreme Heat Alert. The summer offerings include STEM camps, library programming, and evening hangouts, providing diverse opportunities for children and teens. Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn affirmed the District's commitment to making these programs easily accessible through the Out of School Time DC (MOST-DC) portal. This user-friendly site allows parents to find programs based on location and age, with thousands of slots still available. Among the highlighted programs are the DCPS Middle School Summer Learning initiative and the Junior Lifeguard Academy for teens.
Families can also participate in weekly veggie giveaways and fitness activities in local parks. Bowser urged residents to stay hydrated and utilize cooling centers as temperatures rise. The city remains dedicated to offering enriching experiences that support youth development and community engagement.
