Mayor Bowser Highlights Free, Safe and Fun Summer Opportunities for DC Youth, Encourages Families to Stay Cool During Extreme Heat
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced free summer programs for District youth, coinciding with the start of summer camps and the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. Families can register for various activities, including STEM camps and library events, using the Out of School Time DC (MOST-DC) portal. The District is currently under an Extreme Heat Alert, prompting officials to encourage families to stay safe and cool. Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn highlighted the programs' accessibility, aiming to benefit every student in every neighborhood.
Among the offerings are DCPS Middle School Summer Learning, which caters to rising sixth through ninth graders, and the DC Public Library’s Discover Summer, featuring events through August 31. The Junior Lifeguard Academy allows teens to gain lifeguarding skills, while DPR Youth Field Trips provide free Saturday experiences for ages 7–12. Additionally, families can explore more DPR activities, including fitness classes and neighborhood celebrations, through dedicated websites. The District's commitment to enriching summer experiences reflects its investment in the community's youth.
