Mayor Bowser Encourages Residents to Stay Cool During Prolonged Period of Extreme Heat
Mayor Muriel Bowser has activated an Extreme Heat Alert for Washington, DC, from July 25 to July 30, urging residents and visitors to take precautions against high temperatures. The National Weather Service predicts daily highs could reach 99 degrees, with heat indices reaching 109 degrees due to humidity. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors. The city plans to deploy cooling buses to assist unsheltered residents seeking relief from the heat. Cooling centers will be available across the District, providing air-conditioned spaces for individuals to cool off.
Additionally, low-barrier shelters and day centers will operate year-round, offering safe havens and support services. Those needing transportation to shelters can call the DC Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093. This proactive approach underscores the city's efforts to address the needs of its most vulnerable populations during extreme weather conditions.
