Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 aims to enhance enforcement and accountability tools for juveniles in Washington, DC, as announced by Mayor Muriel Bowser. The legislation proposes changing curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August while also applying to 17-year-olds. Bowser stated, "When we see patterns of unsafe or unlawful behavior... we have to act," highlighting the urgency of the measure. Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the importance of safe recreational spaces and empowering police with tools to prevent violence.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will be authorized to create extended curfew zones, allowing curfews to start at 7 PM for up to 30 days based on public safety needs. Recent disturbances involving juveniles in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle underscored the necessity of this legislation. MPD has previously implemented various strategies to address juvenile conduct, but the new law will provide more robust options. The District continues to support youth through summer programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program.
