Mayor Bowser Highlights Free, Safe and Fun Summer Opportunities for DC Youth, Encourages Families to Stay Cool During Extreme Heat
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the continuation of free summer programs for District youth, encouraging families to register as summer camps and the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program kick off. Amid an Extreme Heat Alert, residents are advised to take precautions while enjoying a variety of activities, including STEM camps, library events, and evening hangouts. The District launched the Out of School Time DC portal earlier this year to simplify the registration process for families. Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn stated that the initiative aims to make opportunities easily accessible for all students.
Available programs include engaging options such as middle school summer learning, Discover Summer at the DC Public Library, and the Junior Lifeguard Academy for teens. Families can also participate in fitness classes and community events through the Department of Parks and Recreation. The District's commitment to summer programming highlights its focus on youth development and community engagement. By providing enriching experiences, the city aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for its young residents.
