Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to enhance enforcement of juvenile curfews in Washington, D. C. The legislation aims to grant the Metropolitan Police Department the flexibility to adjust curfew hours in response to increasing incidents of juvenile gatherings leading to violence. Bowser stated, “We have to act” to ensure community safety and protect young people. The revised curfew would shift to 11 PM during July and August and apply to 17-year-olds, while the Chief of Police could designate extended curfew zones beginning at 7 PM for up to 30 days.

This approach mirrors previous measures from the Secure DC Omnibus bill. The emergency legislation responds to recent disturbances in commercial areas, including the Wharf and U Street. In addition to curfew adjustments, the District continues to support youth through various summer programs, such as the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. This comprehensive strategy aims to balance public safety with opportunities for positive youth engagement.
