Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to enhance enforcement tools related to juvenile curfews in Washington, D. C. The proposed changes include adjusting curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August and extending curfew applicability to 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will be authorized to establish extended juvenile curfew zones, where curfews could start as early as 7 PM for 15 days, potentially extendable to 30 days based on public safety concerns. This legislative move follows troubling trends of juvenile gatherings leading to violence in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle.

Increased police presence in neighborhoods aims to prevent negative behavior among youth. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of providing safe recreational spaces for young people while equipping law enforcement with necessary tools. The legislation is set for consideration during the Council's July 1 Legislative Meeting. The District also supports positive youth engagement through summer programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program.
