Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, aimed at strengthening enforcement tools for juvenile curfews in Washington, DC. The legislation proposes changing curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August and extending the curfew's applicability to 17-year-olds. It empowers the Chief of Police to establish extended curfew zones, starting at 7 PM for up to 30 days based on public safety assessments. This initiative follows troubling trends in juvenile behavior, with large groups engaging in violent and unlawful conduct in areas like the Wharf and U Street. Bowser stated that proactive measures are necessary to safeguard both the youth and the community.
Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the need for safe recreational spaces, advocating for additional programming to support youth interests. The Metropolitan Police Department has previously taken measures to address juvenile disturbances, but the proposed legislation aims to enhance their capabilities. This emergency legislation will be submitted for consideration at the Council's July 1 meeting.
