Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to bolster enforcement measures for juvenile curfews in Washington, D. C. The legislation changes curfew hours to 11 p. m. for minors during July and August and extends applicability to 17-year-olds.

It also empowers the Metropolitan Police Department to designate extended curfew zones with earlier curfews starting at 7 p. m. for up to 30 days based on safety concerns. Mayor Bowser noted the necessity of addressing recent disturbances involving youth that have sparked violence in various neighborhoods. Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the dual approach of providing safe recreational spaces while enhancing police authority to maintain order.

The legislation responds to a rise in unlawful behavior among juveniles in areas like the Wharf and U Street. MPD has previously increased its presence to deter negative behavior and enforce public peace laws. The Council will review the proposal at its July 1 Legislative Meeting.
