Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to strengthen enforcement mechanisms for juvenile curfews in Washington, DC. The legislation proposes changing curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August and extending curfew applicability to 17-year-olds. Mayor Bowser noted the alarming trends in youth gatherings that lead to violence, stating, "We have to act. " The Chief of Police will be empowered to establish extended curfew zones, allowing for earlier curfews if public safety is at risk. Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the importance of providing safe recreational spaces for youth while preventing violence.

This initiative follows recent incidents in areas such as the Wharf and Dupont Circle, prompting increased police presence to curb unlawful behavior. The legislation will be submitted for consideration at the Council’s July 1 Legislative Meeting. The District also continues to support youth through various summer programs aimed at promoting positive engagement.
