Mayor Bowser Highlights Free, Safe and Fun Summer Opportunities for DC Youth, Encourages Families to Stay Cool During Extreme Heat
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the availability of free summer programs for youth in Washington, DC, as families begin registering amid an Extreme Heat Alert. The wide array of activities includes STEM camps, library events, and evening hangouts, designed to provide enriching experiences for children and teens across all eight wards. Bowser stated that the city invests significantly in summer programming, recognizing its importance for community and youth development. The Out of School Time DC portal, launched earlier this year, helps families navigate and register for programs easily, with thousands already participating. Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn emphasized the city's effort to make opportunities accessible to every student in every neighborhood.
This summer, various programs like the DCPS Middle School Summer Learning and DC Public Library’s Discover Summer are open for registration. Families are also reminded to stay safe during the heat by visiting local cooling resources. The initiative reflects the city's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for its youth.
