Washington, DCLocal News

The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, announced by Mayor Muriel Bowser, aims to enhance tools for enforcing juvenile curfews in Washington, DC. The initiative seeks to address rising violence and disorder among youth by changing curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August 2025 and extending curfew applicability to 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will be empowered to establish extended curfew zones that can begin at 7 PM for up to 30 days based on public safety needs. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of providing safe spaces for youth while preventing violence. Increased police presence has already been implemented in neighborhoods to deter negative behavior.

Recent disturbances in areas like the Wharf and U Street prompted this emergency legislation. The District also continues to support positive youth engagement through various summer programs, including employment initiatives and recreational activities. This comprehensive approach aims to balance enforcement with opportunities for youth, addressing both safety and community well-being.
