Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to bolster enforcement tools for juvenile curfews in Washington, D. C. The legislation proposes changing curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August and extends the curfew's applicability to 17-year-olds. This act allows the Metropolitan Police Department to establish extended curfew zones that begin at 7 PM, with the possibility of lasting up to 30 days based on safety concerns. Bowser cited recent disturbances involving large groups of juveniles engaging in violence in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle as the impetus for this emergency legislation.
Councilmember Brooke Pinto underlined the need for safe recreational spaces and more programming to engage youth positively. The MPD has previously utilized various methods to manage juvenile behavior, but current tools are limited. The legislation aims to ensure public safety while also fostering positive youth engagement through initiatives like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. The introduction of this legislation signals a proactive approach to addressing youth-related issues in the community.
