Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to enhance juvenile curfew enforcement in Washington, D. C. The legislation seeks to address alarming trends of youth violence by allowing the Metropolitan Police Department to implement flexible curfew measures. Proposed changes include adjusting curfew hours to 11 p. m.

during July and August and granting the Chief of Police authority to establish extended curfew zones starting at 7 p. m. for 15 days, with possible extensions. This emergency legislation comes in response to recent incidents involving large groups of juveniles engaging in harmful behaviors across the city. Bowser underscored the necessity of acting to ensure community safety while also supporting youth through positive programming.

The District continues to offer various summer activities, including employment programs and recreational camps to engage young people. Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the dual approach of ensuring safety while fostering enriching spaces for youth.
