Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to enhance enforcement tools for juvenile safety in Washington, DC. The legislation proposes changing curfew hours to 11 PM during July and August and extending the curfew to include 17-year-olds. Mayor Bowser noted that recent patterns of youth gatherings often lead to violence, necessitating a proactive approach. The act empowers the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to create extended curfew zones and allows for emergency curfew declarations. Councilmember Brooke Pinto emphasized the dual approach of providing safe recreational spaces while equipping police with necessary tools.
The MPD has previously attempted to address juvenile conduct through various means, but found them limited. Recent incidents in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle highlighted the urgency for this legislation. The District continues to support youth programming, including summer employment initiatives and recreation camps.
