Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to extend curfew hours and enhance enforcement tools for juveniles. The act responds to concerning trends of youth violence in public spaces, especially during summer months. The proposed curfew will change to 11 PM for July and August, affecting 17-year-olds as well. The Chief of Police will have the authority to establish extended curfew zones, beginning at 7 PM for up to 30 days if public safety issues arise. Bowser highlighted the importance of preventing violence and disorder before it happens.
Councilmember Brooke Pinto supports the initiative, emphasizing the need for safe recreational spaces for youth. The legislation aims to balance community safety with positive youth engagement through summer programming. The proposal will be submitted for consideration during the Council's July 1 meeting.
