Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser and Councilmember Brooke Pinto have introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to combat rising juvenile violence in Washington, DC. The law changes curfew hours to 11 PM for July and August 2025 and permits the Chief of Police to create extended curfew zones, starting at 7 PM for 15 days. This response follows incidents in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle, where large groups of youth engaged in harmful behavior. The legislation aims to provide the Metropolitan Police Department with flexible enforcement tools to ensure public safety. Additionally, it allows the Mayor to declare an emergency curfew if needed.

This initiative aligns with the District's commitment to offering positive recreational opportunities for youth, including summer employment programs. The Council will review the proposal during their July 1 Legislative Meeting. The changes reflect a proactive approach to maintaining community safety while supporting youth engagement.
