Mayor Bowser Highlights Free, Safe and Fun Summer Opportunities for DC Youth, Encourages Families to Stay Cool During Extreme Heat
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that families in Washington, DC, can still register for a variety of free summer programs aimed at youth, including STEM camps, library events, and pool parties. The Out of School Time DC portal, launched earlier this year, facilitates easy access for parents to find and enroll their children in suitable summer activities. This announcement comes amid an Extreme Heat Alert, prompting officials to remind families to stay safe by hydrating and utilizing cooling resources. Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn stated the initiative seeks to ensure all students have access to enriching experiences that promote personal growth and community connection. Thousands of program slots remain open, including offerings like the Junior Lifeguard Academy and DCPS Middle School Summer Learning.
The District's collaborative efforts involve multiple agencies, including the Department of Parks and Recreation and the DC Public Library. These programs are designed to cater to diverse interests and needs among youth across all neighborhoods. The summer activities not only provide fun but also aim to foster educational and social development.
