Mayor Bowser Highlights Free, Safe and Fun Summer Opportunities for DC Youth, Encourages Families to Stay Cool During Extreme Heat

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that families in Washington, DC can still register for free summer programs, including STEM camps and evening activities, as summer begins. The District offers various enriching experiences for children and teens, such as the DCPS Middle School Summer Learning program and the DC Public Library’s Discover Summer. With an Extreme Heat Alert in effect, families are encouraged to stay safe and hydrated while participating in outdoor activities. The Out of School Time DC portal, launched earlier this year, has made it easier for families to find and register for programs. Thousands of families have already taken advantage of this resource, demonstrating its effectiveness.

Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn reaffirmed the city’s commitment to providing accessible opportunities for youth in every neighborhood. The summer programs result from a collaborative effort among various city agencies, including DCPS and the Department of Parks and Recreation. This initiative aims to foster community engagement and support the development of young people during the summer months.
