Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 to bolster public safety by adjusting juvenile curfew hours. The curfew will be set at 11 p. m. throughout July and August, now including 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will have the authority to designate extended curfew zones starting at 7 p.

m. for up to 15 days, potentially extending to 30 days based on safety assessments. This legislative action responds to recent incidents involving large groups of juveniles engaging in harmful behaviors in areas like the Wharf and U Street. Councilmember Brooke Pinto stressed the importance of providing safe recreational spaces for youth while empowering law enforcement. The legislation will be reviewed during the Council's July 1 Legislative Meeting.

Bowser indicated a proactive approach to addressing public safety concerns amid rising juvenile disturbances. The District also continues to offer summer programs aimed at encouraging positive youth engagement.
