Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 responds to increasing concerns about violence among groups of juveniles in Washington, DC. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Councilmember Brooke Pinto introduced the legislation to enhance public safety through more flexible juvenile curfew enforcement. The new curfew will begin at 11 pm for all juveniles during July and August 2025 and will extend to include 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will have the authority to create extended curfew zones starting at 7 pm for up to 30 days based on public safety assessments. This move follows recent disturbances involving large groups of juveniles in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle.
Increased police presence has been noted as part of the strategy to deter negative behaviors. The legislation also allows the Mayor to authorize emergency curfews in response to urgent situations. The District continues to promote positive youth engagement through programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program.
