Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 seeks to bolster public safety by adjusting curfew hours for juveniles to 11 PM during July and August and allowing the Chief of Police to create extended curfew zones starting at 7 PM for up to 30 days if necessary. Mayor Bowser stressed the need for immediate action due to recent incidents of youth gatherings that have led to violence in areas like Dupont Circle and U Street. Councilmember Brooke Pinto advocated for both safe recreational spaces for youth and enhanced police authority to manage public safety. The legislation will be presented to the Council of the District of Columbia during its upcoming July 1 meeting. In response to previous disturbances, the Metropolitan Police Department has increased its neighborhood presence to deter negative behaviors.

This spring, the MPD has focused on enforcing laws regarding disturbances of the public peace. The proposed legislation reflects a commitment to prevent violence and disorder while ensuring the safety of both juveniles and the broader community. The District continues to support positive youth engagement through various summer programs.
