Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, which aims to extend juvenile curfew hours to improve public safety. Under the new rules, the curfew will be set at 11 PM for July and August and will apply to 17-year-olds. The Chief of Police will gain the authority to create extended juvenile curfew zones that can begin at 7 PM if necessary for public safety. Councilmember Brooke Pinto noted the importance of providing safe recreational opportunities for youth alongside these measures. This legislation arises from recent incidents of violence involving juveniles in popular areas of the city, such as the Wharf and Navy Yard.

The Metropolitan Police Department has increased its presence in neighborhoods to deter unlawful behavior. The District continues to support positive youth engagement through programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. Enhanced enforcement tools will allow authorities to act proactively against potential violence.
