Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, which aims to enhance public safety by extending curfew hours for juveniles. The new law allows the Metropolitan Police Department to enforce curfews starting at 11 pm during July and August, applying to 17-year-olds as well. Furthermore, it gives the Chief of Police authority to establish extended curfew zones that can initiate at 7 pm for up to 30 days, responding to public safety needs. Bowser cited rising disturbances involving juveniles as a catalyst for this legislation, which is set for consideration at the Council's July 1 meeting. The MPD has already increased its presence in neighborhoods to mitigate negative behavior and ensure safety.

Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of providing safe recreational spaces for youth while also empowering police with necessary tools. The legislation reflects a broader commitment to both safety and positive youth engagement through summer programming. This amendment follows previous measures aimed at curbing juvenile disturbances in key areas across the District.
