Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, aiming to enhance public safety through extended juvenile curfew hours. The new law will shift curfew hours to 11 pm during July and August and apply to 17-year-olds, reflecting a proactive approach to community safety. The Chief of Police will be empowered to establish extended curfew zones starting at 7 pm for up to 30 days, addressing recent disturbances linked to juvenile gatherings in commercial districts. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the necessity of providing safe recreational spaces while also equipping law enforcement with tools to prevent violence. This legislation emerges in response to incidents of large groups of juveniles engaging in unlawful behaviors across various neighborhoods.
The Metropolitan Police Department has intensified its patrols to deter negative conduct and enforce laws effectively. Previous measures included enhanced enforcement related to disturbances of the peace and collaboration with local businesses on trespassing signage. The District continues to support positive youth engagement through summer programs like the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program.
