Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws

Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, aiming to extend juvenile curfew hours and enhance public safety enforcement. The act proposes a new 11 PM curfew during July and August, applying to 17-year-olds as well. It also empowers the Chief of Police to establish specific extended curfew zones that could begin at 7 PM for up to 30 days based on safety assessments. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the importance of providing safe recreational spaces alongside these measures. This emergency legislation responds to recent disturbances involving youth in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle.

The Metropolitan Police Department has already increased its presence to deter unlawful behavior among juveniles. The proposed changes will be debated during the Council's July 1 meeting. The city continues to promote positive youth engagement through summer programs, including job initiatives.
