Voters in Fairfax Co. select their nominees to replace late Rep. Gerry Connolly

Washington, DCLocal News

Democrats and Republicans are set to nominate candidates for Virginia's 11th Congressional District seat on Saturday, following the passing of Rep. Gerry Connolly in May. The special election will occur on September 9, and early voting has already seen over 5,000 ballots cast. Erin Covey of The Cook Political Report emphasized the importance of the Democratic primary, as the district has remained a Democratic stronghold since 2008. James Walkinshaw, who served as Connolly's chief of staff, has garnered significant support, including an endorsement from Connolly himself.

However, Walkinshaw faces backlash due to his association with Connolly's campaign funds, which have been redirected to support him. State Sen. Stella Pekarsky and Del. Irene Shin have emerged as viable challengers, each with key endorsements from fellow politicians. Pekarsky's campaign believes they have a strong chance of winning, while Shin has established a well-funded campaign.

The Republican nominee will be determined through a canvass at Fairfax High School, highlighting the competitive nature of this special election.
