Washington, DCLocal News

Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, targeting juvenile safety amid rising violence. The law changes curfew hours to 11 PM for July and August and includes 17-year-olds under its provisions. The Chief of Police can establish curfew zones starting at 7 PM for periods of up to 30 days, reflecting a proactive approach to community safety. Councilmember Brooke Pinto highlighted the need for safe recreational spaces alongside these measures. The legislation arose after disturbances involving juveniles in areas like the Wharf and Dupont Circle.

MPD has previously increased police presence to mitigate negative behaviors among youth. This amendment aims to provide law enforcement with tools to prevent violence while facilitating youth engagement. The District also offers summer programming, including employment initiatives, to encourage positive activities.
