Mayor Bowser Announces Emergency Legislation to Amend Districts Juvenile Curfew Laws
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, which amends curfew hours for juveniles to enhance public safety. The new curfew will begin at 11 PM for July and August and includes 17-year-olds under its provisions. The Chief of Police of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will have the authority to establish extended curfew zones, which can start as early as 7 PM. Councilmember Brooke Pinto noted the dual objectives of providing safe spaces for youth and preventing violence through proactive measures. This emergency legislation responds to troubling trends of youth gatherings leading to violence in areas like the Wharf and U Street.
MPD has aimed to increase police presence to prevent disturbances while enforcing laws related to public peace. Recent incidents have highlighted the need for stronger enforcement tools to protect both juveniles and the community. The Council will review the proposed changes at its July 1 Legislative Meeting.
