Central Oregon cultural events canceled over safety concerns
The cancellation of Latino Fest in Madras and Juneteenth in Bend for 2025 reflects growing safety concerns among immigrant communities in Central Oregon. Organizers cite fears of deportation and violence, stemming from recent immigration enforcement actions and rising racial aggression. Catalina Sánchez Frank, Executive Director of the Latino Community Association (LCA), expressed the community's reluctance to gather in large numbers due to heightened fears. Similarly, the Father’s Group emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety for the Black community, leading to the cancellation of Juneteenth. Although these marquee events are off the calendar, other cultural gatherings in the region, such as the Latino Cultural Festival in Hillsboro and Fiesta Mexicana in Woodburn, are still scheduled to take place.
This cancellation underscores the impact of the current political climate on community events and highlights the ongoing struggle against racial aggression in Central Oregon. As community leaders seek to preserve safety, they also aim for healing and a future where cultural celebrations can thrive without fear. The situation serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities in maintaining their cultural identity amid adversity.
