Commissioners ponder next steps for VIFR

Vashon, WALocal News

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) is facing a leadership transition following the resignation of Fire Chief Matt Vinci, who is moving to a new position in Spokane County District #9. The board has unanimously approved a consultancy with Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority (PSRFA) to provide Deputy Fire Chief Ben Davidson with essential administrative support during this pivotal time. The consultancy is expected to last six months to a year, costing between $33,500 and $67,000. Discussions are ongoing about whether to appoint Davidson as acting chief, with some commissioners emphasizing the need for visible leadership. Union representatives from VIFR’s career firefighters support the consultancy but have requested increased hours.

Concerns about a leadership vacuum have been raised, with the finance director stressing the importance of appointing a permanent chief to avoid setbacks. A stakeholder meeting is planned for early January to involve the community in future decisions. As Davidson prepares for increased responsibilities, he remains confident in maintaining VIFR's high service standards during the transition.
