Vancouver high school teacher arrested for sexual misconduct resigns

Vancouver, WALocal News

Shadbreon Gatson, an English teacher at Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver, has resigned amid serious allegations of sexual misconduct with a former student, which reportedly occurred in 2013. The Vancouver Public Schools district confirmed that Gatson's resignation would be effective February 3, 2025, following his arrest in December 2024, when he was placed on administrative leave. According to court documents, the inappropriate relationship began when the student was assigned detention and continued at school and Gatson's residence, with the student being 16 years old and Gatson 31 at the time. Although the sexual misconduct charges were dropped due to the statute of limitations expiring, local authorities have indicated that more victims have come forward, leading to a broader investigation. The school district condemned the alleged actions, labeling them as "appalling and unacceptable," and has initiated a third-party investigation to ensure accountability.

Two administrators from that period are currently on voluntary leave to allow for a thorough investigation. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding teacher-student boundaries and the necessity for vigilance in educational environments. The Vancouver community awaits further updates as the investigation unfolds.
