B.C. to miss lofty 2030 emissions goal
The B. C. government revealed it will not meet its 2030 emissions reduction goal, expecting only a 20% decline from 2007 levels instead of the targeted 40%. Minister Adrian Dix stated that emissions have leveled off, even as the province’s population and economy have grown. He highlighted a 21% decrease in per capita emissions and a 30% reduction in emissions per unit of GDP, crediting some progress to transportation changes.
Despite these figures, transportation emissions surged by 18% from 2007 to 2022, indicating a need for faster clean energy advancements. Dix emphasized the importance of addressing emissions in the transportation sector, which has not progressed as hoped. The interim leader of the BC Green Party, Jeremy Valeriote, criticized the provincial government for its lack of a clear plan to improve emissions. The report’s findings come ahead of the 2024 provincial election, where climate policy will likely be a key issue. Dix refrained from offering immediate solutions to the current emissions challenges.
