Consider Our Veterans During Fireworks Season

University Place, WALocal News

Mayor Pro Tem Ed Wood highlights the challenges that fireworks pose for veterans with PTSD as the 4th of July approaches. He encourages residents to attend official fireworks displays instead of using personal fireworks, sharing his own experiences with the distressing sounds reminiscent of his service in Iraq. In University Place, fireworks are only legal for discharge on July 4, between 9 a. m. and midnight, with restrictions on the types of fireworks allowed.

The city permits only ground-based sparking devices, which include fountains, cones, and sparklers. Additionally, regulations stipulate that individuals must be at least 16 years old to handle fireworks, and minors need direct adult supervision. Wood's message underscores the importance of safety and consideration for the well-being of others during the holiday. This focus on responsible celebration reflects community values and aims to create a supportive environment for veterans. By promoting awareness, the city seeks to balance festive traditions with respect for those affected by trauma.
