City Honors Former UPPD Chief Masko

Former University Place Police Chief Rob Masko passed away on September 13. He was the city’s second police chief, serving from 2001 to 2005, where he implemented Community Oriented Policing and developed a Youth Intervention & Early Out program. After his police chief position, Masko retired as Undersheriff for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, concluding a 37-year career in law enforcement. In retirement, he continued to advocate for public safety funding by volunteering for the city’s Public Safety Levy Committee. Jen Hales, the city’s public safety director, expressed her admiration for Masko, highlighting his leadership skills and ability to unite teams.

Masko’s initiatives significantly impacted community-police relations and youth engagement in the area. His commitment to public service and community safety leaves a lasting legacy. The city will honor his contributions as they continue to pursue enhanced public safety initiatives.
