What's UP with Biz? Our Growing Community!

University Place, WALocal News

Becky Metcalf from the Department of Community and Economic Development presented to the City Council on September 2, revealing a 63% increase in business licenses in University Place over the past 14 years, now totaling 1,730. Healthcare and social services lead the local economy, followed by professional and technical services, with retail businesses emerging as the third-largest sector. Metcalf noted that despite pandemic-related challenges, the business community in U. P. has shown resilience and growth.

The report is expected to inform future city planning and economic development strategies. In a related note, residents are reminded not to sweep yard waste into storm drains, as it releases harmful bacteria and nutrients into local waterways. This practice contributes to water pollution and increases the risk of street flooding. Proper disposal methods include using approved bags for yard waste and placing them curbside on garbage collection days. Further details from Metcalf's report will appear in upcoming issues of Headlines.
