Water Ways

University Place, WALocal News

The City of University Place oversees eight stormwater basins that facilitate the flow of neighborhood runoff into Puget Sound. Local residents are encouraged to reduce pollutants entering these storm drains, thereby enhancing water quality. The Day Island and Soundview basins utilize both pipes and open ditches for stormwater management. In the Morrison Pothole area, stormwater drains into Morrison Wetland, which can overflow into the Day Island basin during significant rainfall events. The Leach Creek basin serves as a spawning ground for Silver and Chum salmon, highlighting its ecological importance.

Stormwater from the Chambers Creek basin also supports various salmon species before reaching the sound. The city's proactive approach not only aids in preserving local ecosystems but also ensures safer recreational waters for the community. These initiatives emphasize the collective responsibility of residents in maintaining a healthy environment.
