Street Chipsealing Begins July 21

University Place, WALocal News

University Place, WA, will initiate street chipsealing on July 21 as part of a road maintenance effort. This process applies a layer of asphalt oil and rock over existing surfaces, potentially extending their life by up to 10 years. The cost-effectiveness of chipsealing, at approximately $23,000 per lane mile, makes it a practical alternative to the $200,000 needed for complete road replacement. After a week, crews will return to apply a fog seal to manage loose debris. Both procedures require dry weather, and schedule adjustments may be necessary if rain occurs.

Residents will experience only one day of parking and traffic disruptions on each affected street. Crews will post signs to notify residents before work begins. This initiative aims to maintain road quality while minimizing disruptions and costs to the community.
