Pierce County deputies arrest man carrying explosives near abandoned bank

University Place, WALocal News

A 42-year-old man was arrested in Pierce County this week for loitering near an abandoned bank building with "no trespassing" signs. The armed man exhibited suspicious behavior, leading deputies to engage in a foot pursuit after establishing probable cause. Body-worn camera footage captured the man claiming, "I'm not under arrest! " Upon apprehension, deputies discovered the individual had an outstanding warrant from Fircrest Police Department. He faces charges for unlawful possession of drugs, an explosive device, and a firearm.

Authorities highlighted that items like M-80s and sparkler bombs are illegal explosives, raising public safety concerns. M-80s, originally military pyrotechnics, were banned for unlicensed use in 1966. The incident emphasizes the need for vigilance regarding illegal explosives in the community.
